독일 프란츠 요세프 융 국방장관 "미국 미사일방어체제 남유럽으로 확장 제의"

독일의 프란츠 요세프 융 국방장관은 미국의 동유럽 지역 미사일방어체 배치계획을 남부 유럽을 방어하도록 확장시킬 것을 제의했습니다.

유럽연합의 현 의장국인 독일의 융 국방장관은 유럽연합 의회 외교위원회에서 미국의 폴란드, 체크 두 나라에 대한 미사일방어체제 배치계획 문제가 논의되는 가운데 미국의 현계획이 서유럽 지역을 보호하겠지만 유럽의 그 밖의 지역은 보호대상에서 제외되는 것으로 돼 있다고 지적하면서 이같이 제의했습니다.

융 장관은 한편, 러시아가 미국의 미사일방어체제 유럽배치에 대한 반대를 궁극적으론 철회할 것이라고 말했습니다.

German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung has suggested that the proposed U.S. missile defense system be expanded to include coverage of southern Europe.

The German minister, whose country currently holds the rotating EU presidency, told the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee the current U.S. plan to deploy the system in Poland and the Czech Republic would protect Western Europe. But he said the system as currently envisioned would leave other areas of the continent unprotected.

Mr. Jung also expressed hope that Russia will eventually drop its objections to the system. He suggested EU officials take an active role in easing these fears.

Russia says deployment of an anti-missile shield on its western border would represent a threat and undermine cooperation in the United Nations.

U.S. officials say the system would counter threats from so-called "rogue states" like Iran and North Korea.<미국의 소리 2007.4.12>
