2014년 12월 18일, 쿠바는 적대적인 관계였던 미국과 국교정상화를 했다. 

1959년 쿠바혁명 이후 55년 만이다. 이날 오바마 미국 대통령은 성명을 통해 “미국은 지난 반세기 동안 쿠바에 실시해왔던 봉쇄정책을 끝내고 양국관계 회복을 위한 역사적 새 조치들을 취할 것”이라고 밝혔다. 이어 라울 카스트로 쿠바 국가평의회 의장도 성명을 통해 이 같은 사실을 밝혔다. 양국은 억류하고 있던 정보요원 등을 석방하고, 대사관 설립과 국교정상화를 위한 합의 과정도 공개했다.

2015년 7월 20일 양국은 상호간의 수도에 상주하던 이익 대표부를 대사관으로 격상운영 하고 있다.
