지난 수 주간 유엔과 동남아 지역 국회의원, 미국과 유럽의 정상들은 수지 여사의 석방을 촉구했습니다. 버마에서도 수지 여사의 석방을 위한 기도회를 마치고 행진을 벌이던 주민 40명이 체포됐습니다.

인권 단체들은 버마 군사 정부가 국제 사회의 압력 보다는 수지 여사가 석방된 후 일어날 상황을 더 우려하고 있다고 말했습니다. 버마 군부는 수지 여사와 대화를 통해 문제를 해결하려는 시도도 하지 않고 있다는 것이 인권단체들의 지적입니다.

Burma's military leaders have extended their detention of Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi for another year, despite growing international pressure.

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent most of the past 17 years under house arrest, but her current four-year term of detention was up for review this Sunday.

Government sources say Burmese officials visited her residence today (Friday) and read out the extension of her term.

Over the past several weeks, many, including United Nations officials, ASEAN lawmakers and U.S. and European leaders, have called for her release. At least 40 people have been arrested in Burma after marching to temples to pray for her freedom.

Rights activists say Burma's military leaders are more concerned about what might happen if she is released than about international pressure. They also note that the government does not want or think it needs to have a dialogue with her to solve their problems together.(미국의 소리 2007.5.25)
