누리 알-말리키 이라크 총리는30일, 수도 바그다드에서 사담의 죽음은 어두웠던 이라크 역사의 마감이며35년 동안 이라크를 도탄에 빠뜨렸던 차별과 소외정책의 종식이라고 말했습니다.

죠지 부시 미국 대통령은 사담 후세인 구 이라크 독재자의 처형은 이라크가 스스로를 다스리고 지키는 민주주의로 나아가기 위한 중대한 이정표라고 말했습니다.

 부시 대통령은 그러나 후세인 처형으로 이라크에서 폭력사태가 멈추지는 않을 것이라고 경고했습니다.  누리 알-말리키 이라크 총리는 사담을 추종하는 수니파 회교도 바트당원들에게 이라크 재건을 위해 무고한 사람들이 피를 흘리지 않도록 도우라고 촉구했습니다.

 사형제도를 반대하는 일본과 호주는 이라크의 전 독재자 처형집행 결정을 존중한다고 말했습니다.

그러나 인도와 러시아는 후세인 처형이 이라크에서 한 층 더 불안정과 폭력을 초래할 것이라고 경고했습니다. 팔레스타인 과격단체 하마스가 주도하는 자치정부는 후세인 사형집행을 규탄했으며 이란은 이라크 국민들의 승리라고 말했습니다. 리비아는 사담 후세인의 죽음에 대해 사흘 동안의 공식 애도기간을 선포했습니다.

교황청은 사담의 처형이 정의나 화해로 나아가는 길이 될 수 없다고 말했습니다. 교황청 대변인은 처형의 위험은 보복정신에 불을 붙이고, 새로운 폭력의 씨를 뿌릴지도 모른다고 말했습니다.

한편, 국제인권단체들과 사형제도를 반대하는 몇 몇 나라들은 사담 처형을 규탄했습니다. 미국의 민간 인권단체 휴먼 롸이츠 워치는 사담 재판이 크게 잘못된 것이었다고 지적하고 그가 자행한 허다한 인권침해에도 불구하고 그에 대한 교수형 집행은 잔인하고 비인간적이라고 규탄했습니다.   

이라크의 일부 지역과 파키스탄, 인도 등 일부 국가에서는 사담처형에 항의하는 군중시위가 벌어지기도 했습니다.
