미국의 조지 부시 대통령은 4일 이라크의 영향력 있는 시아파 성직자 압둘 아지즈 알 하킴 의장을 백악관에서 접견하고 이라크내 종파간 폭력사태를 줄이기 위한 방안을 논의합니다.

알 하킴 의장은 이라크 정부내 가장 큰 정치세력으로 친 이란계인 이라크 이슬람 혁명 최고위원회 - SCIRI의 지도자입니다.

매일매일의 정책결정에 성직자들이 관여하는 것을  이라크 정부 관리들이 금지하고 있기 때문에 알 하킴 의장은 각료 직은 맡고 있지 않습니다.

그러나 알 하킴 의장은 이슬람 혁명 최고위원회의 군사조직인 ‘바드르 여단’이 수천명의 병력을 거느리고 있기 때문에 상당한 영향력을 발휘하고 있습니다.

한편 이라크 주둔 미군은 지난 2일과 3일 이라크 여러 지역에서 벌어진 전투로 미군 아홉명이 무장분자들의 공격을 받고 숨졌다고 밝혔습니다.

이라크 경찰은 또한 3일 바그다드에서 종파간 폭력에 희생된 것으로 보이는  50구의 사체를 발견했다고 말했습니다.

President Bush is to meet an influential Iraqi Shi'ite cleric at the White House today (Monday) for talks on how to reduce the sectarian violence in Iraq.

Abdel Aziz al-Hakim is the leader of the pro-Iranian Supreme Council of Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), one of the largest factions in the Iraqi government.

Hakim does not hold a ministerial post because Iraqi officials have barred clerics from taking part in day-to-day decision-making. But, he has considerable influence because of his party's military wing, the Badr Brigade, which has thousands of men.

In another development, the U.S. military in Iraq says insurgents killed nine American troops in several battles around the country Saturday and Sunday.

Iraqi police also say 50 people were found dead across Baghdad Sunday after having been tortured and killed by sectarian death squads.(미국의 소리)
