인도, 첫 달 탐사위성 발사 성공

인도는 오늘 아침, 인도로서는 첫 달 탐사위성 찬드라얀1호를 남부 안드라프라데시 주 스리하리코타 섬의 우주센터에서 발사했습니다.

찬드라얀1호를 탑재한 로켓은 발사된 후 바로 구름 속으로 들어가 버렸으나 발사 후, 인도우주연구기구의 나일 장관은 인도는 달 여행을 개시하는 역사적인 순간을 맞이했고 초기단계는 완벽하다며 발사가 성공했다고 밝혔습니다.

찬드라얀은 달의 약 100킬로미터 상공을 돌면서 2년 동안 달 표면을 조사하게 됩니다.

달 탐사위성 발사는 러시아와 미국, 일본, 중국 등에 이어 6번째로, 경제성장을 발판으로 본격적으로 우주개발분야에 참여하려는 인도는 국산 로켓을 사용해 위성을 발사하며 기술력을 과시했습니다.

Indian PM Manmohan Singh hailed the launch as the "first step" in a historic milestone in the country's space programme. "Our scientists have again done the country proud," he said.

The robotic probe will orbit the Moon, compiling a 3-D atlas of the lunar surface and mapping the distribution of elements and minerals. The launch is regarded as a major step for India.

The launch was greeted with applause by scientists gathered at the site. There has been a lot of excitement about the event, which was broadcast live on national TV.

The space programme has been largely welcomed. Most people say despite scarce resources India should keep pace with other space-faring nations.

The launch attracted worldwide media attention and many journalists flocked to the space centre, in Sriharikota, north of the southern city of Chennai, to cover the launch.
