반기문 유엔사무총장, 버마 인권 개선 촉구 (E)

반기문 유엔 사무총장은 국제사회가 버마의 인권상황에 대해 여전히 우려하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.

반 총장은 20일 유엔총회에 제출된 인권 보고서를 통해 이같이 밝혔습니다.

미셸 몬타스 사무총장 대변인은 버마 정부가 최근 인권과 관련해 유엔이 표명한 우려에 대해 의미있는 진전을 이루지 못하고 있다는 반 총장의 발언을 전했습니다.

유엔은 버마가 2010년 총선을 앞두고 취해야 할 일련의 조치를 권고해 왔습니다.

몬타스 대변인은 반 총장이 버마 정부가 민주화 운동 지도자인 아웅산 수치와 다른 정치범들을 우선 석방해 대화의 물꼬를 터야 한다고 거듭 지적했다고 전했습니다.

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon says the human rights situation in Burma remains a source of frustration for the international community.

Mr. Ban made his remarks Monday in a human rights report to the U.N. General Assembly.

A spokeswoman for the secretary-general (Michele Montas) quoted Mr. Ban as saying Burma's government has not undertaken any meaningful steps in response to the concerns recently expressed by the world body.

The United Nations has outlined a series of measures Burma should take in preparation for the 2010 elections.

The spokeswoman said Mr. Ban reiterated the U.N. position that the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners is the key for the resumption of a meaningful dialogue in Burma.
