“북한 청진서 최근 코로나19 의심 환자 사망”

앵커: 북한 함경북도 청진에서 기침과 고열 증세를 보이는 코로나19 의심 환자가 증가 추세에 있으며, 일부 의심 증세를 보이는 환자들은 사망하기도 한 것으로 알려졌습니다. 양희정 기자가 보도합니다.

일본 언론매체 아시아프레스 오사카 사무소의 이시마루 지로 대표는 6일 자유아시아방송( RFA)에 지난달 말 함경북도 취재 협력자가 청진시에서 코로나19 감염자 발생이 의심되는 상황을 보고해 왔다고 밝혔습니다.

이시마루 대표: 청진에서 (코로나19 유사) 증상을 보이는 환자가 많이 발생하고 있고, 집에서 죽는 사람이 늘어나고 있어서 사람들이 많이 무서워하고, 약을 먹어도 효과가 없으니까 코로나19가 아닌가 이렇게 판단하는 사람들이 많아지고 있더라고요.

청진시의 포항구역과 수남구역을 중심으로 2월 들어 기침과 고열 등 코로나19 와 유사한 증상을 보이는 주민이 늘고 있지만, 병원이나 진료소에서는 해열제나 감기약을 처방하고 있다고 이시마루 대표는 전했습니다.

이시마루 대표는 북한 의료진의 이 같은 조치는 코로나19에 관해 알리지 못하도록 하는 중앙 정부의 함구령과 코로나19 감염 여부를 진단할 키트 즉 도구가 지방에는 배포되지 않았기 때문일 것이라고 말했습니다.

이시마루 대표는 그러면서 소식통에 따르면 청진 시내 아파트에 사는 지인들이 병원에서 결핵이나 기관지염 혹은 감기라는 진단을 받고 처방약을 먹었는데 차도가 없이 자택에서 사망하는 사례도 있다고 설명했습니다.

북한 당국은 고열이 나는 사람에게 진단서를 발급하고 휴직시키고 있다고 그는 덧붙였습니다.

이시마루 대표는 중국과의 무역 거점인 나선을 통해 청진으로 코로나19가 유입된 것으로 진단했습니다.

이시마루 대표: 북한에서 두 번째로 중국하고 왕래가 많은 나선이 있지 않습니까? 그래서 나선시를 통해서 청진까지 코로나19바이러스가 들어와서 확산 중이 아닌가? 그 가능성이 있다…

청진에서 불과 100여 킬로미터 북쪽에 있는 나선은 북한에서 신의주 다음으로 중국과 무역 등 왕래가 빈번한 경제특구 도시라고 그는 지적했습니다.

북중 국경이 지난 1월말 봉쇄된 후에도 나선의 물류가 청진으로 유입되었고, 이 과정에서 코로나19 바이러스가 청진으로 확산됐을 가능성이 충분하다고 이시마루 대표는 주장했습니다.

북한 동부 지역에서 중국과의 최대 교역 거점인 나선은 중국인들이 차량을 직접 가지고 들어갈 수 있고, 중국으로부터 연간 수 만 명에 달하는 무역업자나 관광객이 유입되는 도시라고 그는 덧붙였습니다.

그는 이어 청진에서는 소독약이 부족해 농약 분무기로 공동화장실 등에 소금물을 살포하는 등 방역 환경이 매우 열악했다고 전했습니다.

이시마루 대표: 청진은 북한에서 세 번째로 인구가 많은 도시로 당연히 방역에 신경을 많이 써야하지 않습니까? 그럼에도 불구하고 소독제도 많이 부족하고, 방역관들이 방호복도 착용하지 않고 있었다고 하고, 병원에서도 특별히 코로나19 감염을 담당하지 못하고 있다…

한편, 북한 박명수 보건성 국가위생검열원 원장은 지난1일 평양에서 가진 외신 기자설명회에서 북한에서 코로나19 환자가 1명도 발생하지 않았다고 주장했습니다.

박 원장은 앞서 지난 2월 18일에도 일본 교도통신과의 인터뷰에서 대규모 집회를 최대한 제한하는 등 철저한 예방대책을 취하고 있으며, 북한에는 코로나19 감염자가 없다고 밝힌 바 있습니다.

그러나 로버트 에이브럼스 주한미군사령관은 지난 3일 미국 CNN등과의 인터뷰에서 ‘모든 정보를 근거로 할 때’ 코로나19환자가 한 명도 나오지 않았다는 북한의 발표는 불가능한 주장이라고 지적했습니다.

에이브럼스 사령관은 정보의 자세한 출처 등을 공개할 수 없다면서도 “북한군이 2월부터 3월 초까지 약30일 동안 봉쇄됐다는 것을 안다”며 확산을 막기 위해 엄격한 조치를 취한 것이라고 말했습니다[자유아시아방송]

Despite being geographically located between China, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, and South Korea, which has struggled with COVID-19, North Korea has been adamantly silent on the situation in the county and remains one of the very few Asian nations not to have reported a single case.

 

North Korea reports that it is going on about its life as the COVID-19 pandemic is raging across the world, claiming that they have not registered any coronavirus case in their country. The already-sheltered state was among the first to close its borders to prevent the spread of the disease.

Apparently it's not the only country where COVID-19 has failed to make headlines: Reporters Without Borders reproached Turkmenistan for playing down the pandemic, leading many news sources to falsely report that it had banned the word 'coronavirus'.

The DPRK's health ministry claimed that these measures, coupled with thorough disinfection, are the reason for their self-reported success in withstanding the virus
