미국 정부 고위관료는 14일, 보도관계자에게 전화로 설명하는 과정에서, 아사드 정권이 화학무기를 사용했다는 것을 나타내는 명확하고 설득력 있는 정보가 있다고 말했습니다.

이어, 사용된 것으로 추정되는 화학무기에 대해, 피해자의 증상 등을 종합적으로 분석한 결과, 맹독성 사린과 유독성 염소가스였다고 보고 있다고 밝혀, 군사공격의 정당성을 주장했습니다.

한편, 국방부의 화이트 대변인은 기자회견에서, "아사드 정권이 화학무기를 사용한 것을 나타내는 증거를 공개하지 않느냐"는 질문에 대해, "정보 기밀에 관한 것"이라며 밝히지 않았었습니다.

또, 트럼프 대통령은 14일, 이번 군사공격과 관련해, 마크롱 프랑스 대통령, 메이 영국 수상과 잇따라 전화로 회담했는데, 백악관에 따르면 양 정상과 작전의 성공을 확인하는 동시에, 아사드 정권이 더 이상 화학무기를 사용하게 하지 않을 것이라는 인식을 같이 했습니다.
