NASA postpones launch of space shuttle Endeavour

The U.S. space agency NASA said on Sunday that it has decided to postpone the scheduled Sunday launch of space shuttle Endeavour until Monday due to thunderstorms near the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

    "Looks like the team is ready but the weather is not. At this time we are no-go," NASA's launch director said. The next launch attempt will be at 6:51 p.m. EDT (2251 GMT) Monday, according to NASA.

    Endeavour should have blasted off to the international space station in mid-June, but the launch was postponed by potentially dangerous leaks of hydrogen gas.

    Endeavour's 16-day mission will feature five spacewalks and complete construction of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Kibo laboratory. Astronauts will attach a platform to the outside of the Japanese module that will allow experiments to be exposed to space

미국 항공우주국(NASA)은 폭풍우로 인해 케네디 우주 센터에서 발사 예정이었던 우주왕복선 인데버호의 발사를 연기한다고 12일 밝혔다. NASA는 7명을 태운 엔데버호의 발사를 앞두고 폭풍우가 안전 규정을 넘어서는 수준으로 거세게 몰아친 데 따라 모든 계획을 중단했다고 설명했다.

   NASA는 오는 13일 엔데버호 발사를 다시 시도할 예정이라고 말했다. 엔데버호는 애초 지난달 13일 발사 예정이었으나 연료 주입 과정에서 발생한 기술적 문제로 지난 11일로 미뤄졌었다. NASA는 그러나 11일 발사대 주변에 벼락이 몰아친 데 따라 시스템 점검이 필요하다는 이유로 발사를 12일로 재차 연기한 바 있다.

   우주에서 16일간에 걸쳐 임무를 수행할 예정인 엔데버호는 작년 6월 국제우주정거장(ISS)에 설치된 일본제 과학실험 모듈 '키보'의 마지막 부품을 실어나를 예정이다.

   한편, 7명의 인데버호 탑승 우주인이 ISS와 무사히 도킹하면 ISS에는 역대 최대인 13명의 우주인이 생활하게 된다.
