남아공 새 대통령에 칼레마 모틀란테 (E)

남아프리카 공화국의 새 대통령에 집권당인 '아프리카 민족회의' ANC의 칼레마 모틀란테 부총재가 선출됐습니다.

남아공 의회는 25일 비밀투표에서 모틀란테를 찬성 269표 대 반대 50표로 선출했으며 모틀란테는 곧바로 대통령 취임선서를 마쳤습니다.

모틀란테 신임 대통령은 첫 의회연설에서, 남아공에 경제 성장을 가져온 현 정책을 바꾸지 않을 것이라고 말하고 그러나 일자리를 늘리기 위해 더 많은 노력을 기울일 것을 약속했습니다.

모틀란테새 대통령은 지난 21일 ANC당내의 권력다툼 끝에 퇴진한 타보 음베키 전 대통령의 후임으로 선출됐습니다. 모틀란테는 내년 4월 총선 때까지 과도기 국정을 이끌어 나갈 예정이며, 총선에서는 ANC당의 제이콥 주마 총재의 당선이 확실시되고 있습니다.

South Africa has a new president -- Kgalema Motlanthe -- elected by parliament and sworn into office today (Thursday).

Lawmakers elected Mr. Motlanthe by a vote of 269 to 50 in a secret ballot. The new president took the oath of office a short time later.

In his first speech to parliament, the new president said he will not change the policies that have brought South Africa sustained economic growth, but he vowed to increase efforts to create more jobs.

He also announced his new Cabinet, retaining a majority of ministers from the previous Cabinet, including respected Finance Minister Trevor Manuel.

The new president is the deputy leader of South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC)party. He replaces Thabo Mbeki, who resigned Sunday in a power struggle within the ANC.

Mr. Motlanthe is due to serve until elections next April, when ANC chief Jacob Zuma is expected to capture the presidency.
