세계은행· UN, 식량가격 급등으로 인한 소요사태 경고

세계은행과 유엔은 전 세계적인 식량 가격 급등으로 여러 나라에서 소요가 촉발될 수 있다고 경고하면서, 특히 아프리카 상황이 심각하다고 말했습니다.

코트디브아르와 니제르, 세네갈, 카메룬, 부르키나파소 같은 나라들에서는 이미 폭동이 일어나고 있습니다.

파이낸셜 타임스 신문은 유엔 국제농업기금 부총재의 말을 인용해, 지난 몇 달 사이에 쌀 가격이 두 배로 오르면서 그같은 폭동이 더 자주 발생하고 있다고 보도했습니다.

세계은행의 로버트 죌릭 총재는 앞서 이번 주에, 33개 나라에서 기아로 인한 소요사태가 발생할 수도 있다면서, 높은 식량 가격이 앞으로 당분간 문제가 될 것이라고 예상했습니다.

Officials at the World Bank and United Nations are warning that soaring food prices around the world could spark unrest in dozens of nations, particularly in Africa.

Riots have already occurred in Ivory Coast, Niger, Senegal, Cameroon, and Burkina Faso.

A news article in the Financial Times quotes the vice president of the UN's International Fund for Agriculture Kanayo Nwanze saying such unrest could become more common after rice prices doubled in recent months.

World Bank President Robert Zoellick said earlier this week that unrest driven by hunger could hit as many as 33 nations, and expects high food prices to be a problem for some time.

The prices of corn, wheat, and soybeans have all reached records this year.

Experts blame the high prices on rising demand from a growing population, the expanding biofuels industry, rising prices for fuel and fertilizer, and bad weather in some farming areas.
