FAO '곡물가격 상승으로 세계 곳곳 폭동' 경고 (E)

유엔 식량농업기구, FAO는 9일 국제 곡물가격 상승이 식량 폭동을  촉발할 수 있다고 경고했습니다.

자크 디우프 FAO 사무총장은 인도 뉴델리에서 열린 기자 회견에서 국제 곡물가격이 지난 9개월간 45% 올랐다며, 쌀과 밀가루, 옥수수가 심각하게 부족한 상황이라고 밝혔습니다.

디우프 사무총장은 이미 이집트와 카메룬, 하이티, 세네갈 등에서 식량 폭동이 발생했다고 지적했습니다. 디우프 사무총장은 수입의 50~60%를 식품구입에  써야하는 개발 도상국들에서는 계속 폭동이 발생할 가능성이 높다고 밝혔습니다.

디우프 사무총장은 이같은 위기는 기후 변화를 포함해  생물연료 소비 증가와 연료 가격 인상 등의 요인이 복합적으로 작용했기 때문이라고 밝혔습니다.

FAO는   농업 기반시설에 투자를 더 해 이같은 식량 부족현상을 완화할 것을 각국정부에  촉구했습니다.

The head of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization warns rising commodity prices could spark more food riots unless member nations take action to help the poor.

FAO Director Jacques Diouf said today at a forum in New Delhi, India that food prices have jumped 45 percent in the last nine months and that there are "serious shortages" of rice, wheat and maize.

Diouf said there already have been food riots in Egypt, Cameroon, Haiti, Burkina Faso and Senegal. He warned the chance for more riots is high in developing nations where people spend 50 to 60 percent of their income on food.

Diouf blamed the crisis on a combination of factors, including climate change, increased demand for biofuels and higher energy prices.

The FAO is urging countries to invest in rural infrastructure to help ease the shortage.
