중국, 인권단체에 대한 통제 강화 (E)

중국 당국이 최근 국내 인권단체와 보도매체에 대한 통제를 강화하고 있다고 미국의 인권단체가 2일 밝혔습니다.

뉴욕에 본부를 둔 인권단체 ‘휴먼 라이츠 워치’ 관계자는  중국이 2008년 베이징 올림픽을 앞두고 인권과 언론 상황을  개선하는 대신 통제를 강화하고 있다고 말했습니다.

이 단체의 브래드 아담스 아시아 국장은 이날 중국 당국은  시민들이 정치적, 사회적 문제를 외부에 발설하는 것을 두려워하고 있다고 했습니다. 이어 그는 최근 중국 당국이 취한 일련의 조치가 반발을 불러일으켜 상황이 상당히 악화됐다고 전했습니다.그러나 중국 당국은 이 같은 발언에 아무런 논평을 하지 않았습니다.

이에 앞서 중국 당국은 올해 초에 외국의 언론매체에 대해 보다 자유로운 취재와 보도를 허용하겠다고 발표했습니다. 그러나 아담스 국장은 언론 자유를 허용하겠다는 중국 당국의 조치가 일관성이 없는데다 중국 국내 언론인에게는 해당되지 않는다고 지적했습니다.

Human Rights Watch says China is tightening its grip on human rights activists and the media, in an effort to suppress ｅxpressions of dissent ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The New York-based group voiced concern today (Thursday) that, instead of making progress on long-standing human rights issues, China has become increasingly intolerant of human rights defenders.

The group's Asia director, Brad Adams, said China appears to be afraid its citizens will embarrass the government ahead of the Olympics by speaking out about political and social problems.

Adams told VOA (Mandarin Service) that the government's efforts to limit dissent are creating more tensions and leading to an increased number of protests and violence. He says the situation is very unstable(미국의 소리 2007.8.2)
