미-러, '전략무기감축협정 대채조약 연말까지 마련'

미국과 러시아 정상은 15일 전략무기감축협정(START-1)을 대체할 새로운 조약을 연말까지 만들어 내겠다는 양국 정부의 입장을 재확인 했습니다.

미국의 바락 오바마 대통령과 러시아의 드미트리 메드베데프 러시아 대통령은 이날 아시아태평양경제협력체(APEC) 정상회의가 개최 중인 싱가포르에서 만나 이같이 합의했습니다.

기존의 전략무기감축협정은 오는 12월5일 그 시효가 만료됩니다.   

미국과 러시아 정상은 또 이란 핵문제 해결 방안도 집중 논의했습니다. 메드베데프 대통령은 이란이 농축 우라늄을 러시아로 반출하도록 이란 당국을 설득할 수 있을 것이라고 말했습니다.

 

The two Presidents discussed progress on drawing up a new strategic arms reduction treaty to replace the START-1 Treaty, signed in 1991, which expires in early December.

Mr Medvedev and Mr Obama agreed to make the mechanism for verifying strategic arms reductions simpler and less costly.

In a joint press statement with Mr Obama following the talks Mr Medvedev said he hoped that the new strategic arms reduction treaty could be concluded in December this year.

The two leaders also examined options for settling issues related to the Iranian nuclear programme and the situation in Afghanistan.
