President Bush and European Union leaders say they are committed to a successful conclusion of the Doha round of world trade talks and announced an initiative to boost trans-Atlantic trade.

Mr. Bush hosted an annual summit on economic and security issues at the White House today (Monday). He met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as Germany currently holds the rotating EU presidency, and with the head of the European Commission, Jose Barroso.

Chancellor Merkel called it a "good day" for the U.S.-European relationship.

Mr. Barroso said the United States and the EU remain actively engaged in the Doha round, despite launching an initiative to boost trans-Atlantic trade by reducing regulatory barriers.

The leaders also praised an "open skies" aviation deal aimed at boosting trans-Atlantic commerce.
