전세계적으로15세 이하 어린이들 2백 여만 명이 에이즈 바이러스, H-I-V 감염돼 있다고 국제민간기구들이 밝혔습니다.

어린이를 위한 국제운동은 26일에 발표한 보고서에서 이같이 밝히고 H-I-V 감염 어린들의 대다수가 아프리카 사하라 사막 이남지역의 어린이들이며 이들은 적절한 H-I-V 치료를 받을 길이 없다고 지적했습니다.

보고서는 H-I-V 어린이들 가운데 90퍼센트가 어머니로부터 감염됐으며 H-I-V에 감염된 어머니들 가운데 어린이들에게 감염되는 것을 예방할 약을 제공받는 수는 10퍼센트 미만이라고 밝혔습니다.

A coalition of seven leading child advocacy groups says more than two million children under are living with the virus that causes AIDS.

The Global Movement for Children issued a report Friday at the United Nations that says the majority of these children under the age of 15 live in sub-Saharan Africa, where they have no access to proper treatment for H.I.V.

The report says mother-to-child transmission is responsible for 90 percent of H.I.V.-infected children. Less than 10 percent of infected mothers receive the drugs needed to prevent passing on the virus to their children.

The report also says one child every minute dies of an AIDS-related illness.

Ann Veneman, head of the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF), says children have become - in her words - "the missing face of the AIDS pandemic" because adults have been the main focus in the fight against the disease.(미국의 소리)
