유엔, 바이오 연료 필요성 옹호 (E)

국제적 식량위기에 관한 새로운 유엔 특별대책반의 책임을 맡은 홈스 인도주의 문제와 긴급 구호 담당 유엔 사무차장은 단지 식량가격폭등 때문에 바이오 연료가 배제되서는 안된다고 말했습니다.

홈스 차장은 30일, 바이오 연료는 기후 변화의 영향에 대처하기 위해 개발된 것이라면서, 모든 바이오 연료가 나쁘다고 규정하는 것은 잘못된 일이라고 지적했습니다.

홈스 차장은 AFP 통신과의 회견에서, 세계는 반사적인 반응을 피해야 할 필요가 있다고 말했습니다. 그러나, 홈스 차장은 특별대책반은 바이오 연료를 위해 곡물이 언제 어떻게 이용되는지 면밀하게 살펴볼 필요가 있다고 덧붙였습니다.

The head of a new United Nations task force on the global food crisis says biofuels should not be eliminated just because of surging food prices.

U.N. Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief John Holmes said today (Wednesday) biofuels were developed to combat the effects of climate change and that it would be wrong to label all biofuels as bad.

But Holmes also said the task force needs to take a close look at how and when crops are used for biofuels.

Earlier this month, a U.N. agency (UNESCO) report said biofuel is diverting food crops toward fuel production. The International Monetary Fund says growing biofuel production in the United States, Brazil and other countries is a key reason food prices are rising.
