미국 게이츠 국방장관, 바그다드 전격방문 (Eng)

로버트 게이츠 국방장관은 18일 거의 200명이 사망한 최근 이라크 내 최악의 폭탄 공격이 발생한 지 하루만에 바그다드를 전격방문했습니다. 게이츠 장관은 이에 앞서 이스라엘을 방문해 이스라엘 총리와 이란 핵문제 등을 논의한 후 바그다드에 도착했습니다.

게이츠 장관은 18일의 공격을 “끔찍한”일이라고 비난했지만, 이번 공격으로 바그다드의 치안을 개선하기위한 미군주도의 노력에는 영향이 없을 것이라고 말했습니다.

게이츠 장관은 이라크의 혼란 사태는 중동의 전 지역에 피해를 줄 것이라며 중동 국가들에 이라크의 안정화를 도와줄 것을 촉구했습니다.

누리 알-말리키 이라크 총리는 18일 이같은 만행을 규탄하고 공격자들을 “악마의 병사”라고 비난했습니다. 

한편 이라크 경찰은 19일 바그다드의 시아파 구역에서 한 자살차량폭탄 공격이 발생해 적어도 11명이 숨지고 20명 이상이 부상당했다고 말했습니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is in Iraq for a surprise visit one day after bombs killed nearly 200 people in Baghdad's worst violence in months.

Gates arrived in the Iraqi capital from Israel. He called Wednesday's bombings "horrifying," but said the attacks would have no effect on U.S.-led efforts to improve security in Baghdad.

Gates has used his Middle East tour to call on the states in the area to help stabilize Iraq, saying chaos there would hurt every country in the Middle East.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki also condemned Wednesday's attacks on mostly Shi'ite areas of Baghdad, calling those responsible "soldiers of satan."

Meanwhile, a suicide car bomber struck a Shi'ite district in Baghdad today (Thursday), killing 11 people. (미국의 소리 2007.4.19)
