코란(이슬람 경전) 62장 9~10절에는 "금요일 기도 시간이 되면 생업을 모두 중단하고 모여 진심으로 알라(이슬람의 유일신)를 경배하라. 기도가 끝나면 흩어져서 그의 은총을 구하고 그를 찬양하라"고 적혀 있다. 알라신은 지도자는 국민의 눈과 귀가 돼야 한다고 이야기 하고 있다

이슬람의 휴일은 국가별로 목요일과 금요일을 쉬거나 금요일과 토요일을 쉬는 등 차이가 있다. 그러나 금요일엔 모든 이슬람 국가의 관공서와 직장, 학교가 문을 닫는다.
