부시, 미국-유럽연합 협력 강조 (E)

조지 부시 미국 대통령은 테러리스트들이 아프가니스탄에 은신처를 마련하지 못하도록, 유럽연합이 미국과 더욱 긴밀하게 협력해야 한다고 촉구했습니다

파리에서 '경제협력개발기구' 회의에 참석한 부시 대통령은, 범대서양 협력의 새 장을 언급하면서, 이 지역 지도자들이 '용감하고 젊은' 아프가니스탄 민주주의를 지원할 것을 요청했습니다.

부시 대통령은 미국과 유럽의 협력은 중동 지역에 민주주의와 자유, 정의를 꽃피우고, 이란 핵 위협에 대처하는 데도 도움이 될 것이라고 강조했습니다.

이밖에 부시 대통령은 기후변화와 세계식량위기, 테러 대처의 중요성도 언급했습니다.

부시 대통령은 회의를 마친 후 13일 로마로 향했으며, 이탈리아 정부 지도자들과 교황 베네딕토 16세를 만날 예정입니다.

U.S. President George Bush has urged European leaders to work even more closely with the United States in ensuring that terrorists can never gain a safe haven in Afghanistan.

In an address in Paris to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Mr. Bush called for what he termed a new era in Trans-Atlantic relations. He urged leaders to stand behind what he called this "brave, young" Afghan democracy in its current struggle.

He also stressed the importance of U.S.-European cooperation in helping the ideals of democracy, liberty and justice flourish in the Middle East, and in efforts to deal with Iran's nuclear threat.

The president also noted the importance of dealing with climate change, the world food crisis and terrorism.

Earlier today (Friday) Mr. Bush flew to Paris from Rome following talks with Italian leaders and Pope Benedict.
