미국, 파키스탄 국가비상사태 조기해제 촉구 (E)

미국은 파키스탄 국가비상사태의 조기 해제와 정당 관계자들과 평화적인 시위자들에 대한 석방을 촉구했습니다.

고든 존드로 백악관 대변인은 9일 발표한 성명에서, 모든 당사자들이 민주주의의 길로 복귀하기 위해 폭력을 자제하고, 힘을 합쳐 노력할 것을 촉구했습니다. 그는 페르베즈 무샤라프 대통령이 내년 1월 중순 이전에 총선거를 실시하겠다고 한 약속을 이행하기를 미국은 기대한다고 말했습니다.

이에 앞서 백악관은 무샤라프 대통령에게 부토 전 총리 등 정당 지도자들에게 이동의 자유를 허용할 것을 촉구한 바 있습니다.

로버트 게이츠 미 국방장관은 파키스탄 사태에 우려를 표시했습니다. 게이츠 장관은 파키스탄 국내문제가 장기화될수록 파키스탄 군과 보안군이 미혹되어 변경지역을 위협하는 테러분자들의 위협에 대처하는데 차질을 가져올 것이라고 지적했습니다.

한편, 파키스탄  당국은 9일 오후,   베나지르 부토 전 총리에 대한  가택연금을 해제했습니다. 정부 관계자는 이날, 부토 전 총리에 대한 가택연금이 해제됐다고 밝혔습니다.

이에 앞서 자택에 연금됐던 부토 전 총리는 국가비상사태에 항의하는 라왈핀디 집회에 참가하기 위해 집을 나서려고 두 차례나 시도했지만, 경찰의  저지로  좌절됐습니다.

부토 전 총리는 집밖에 모여든 지지자들에게 행한 연설에서, 야당은 페르베즈 무샤라프 대통령에게 국가비상사태를 해제하고, 군사령관직에서 물러나며, 내년 1월 중순에 예정대로 총선거를 실시해야 한다고 되풀이 촉구했습니다.

부토 전 총리는 다음 주 초에 라호레에서 이슬라마바드에 이르는 항의시위를 직접 이끌 계획이라고 밝혔습니다.

The United States has called for an early end to the state of emergency in Pakistan, and the release of political party members and peaceful protesters.

White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe today (Friday) urged all sides to refrain from violence and work together to put Pakistan back on the path to democracy.

He said the U.S. expects Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to uphold his promise to hold general elections before mid-February.

Earlier, the White House demanded Pakistan allow former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and other political party leaders freedom of movement. Ms. Bhutto was later freed from house arrest after being blocked from leading a rally against emergency rule.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates also voiced concern about the situation in Pakistan.

He said the longer Pakistan's internal problems continue, the more distracted the Pakistani army and security services will be in confronting terrorist threats in the frontier area.

The government of Pakistan freed former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto from house arrest late today (Friday), after earlier blocking her from leading a rally against emergency rule.

Government officials say the detention order has been withdrawn.

Earlier, Ms. Bhutto tried twice to leave her residence in the capital, Islamabad, to attend a rally she organized against President Pervez Musharraf in nearby Rawalpindi. But she was unable to break through the barricades, barbed wires and riot police surrounding her home.

Speaking outside the house with supporters by her side, Ms. Bhutto repeated opposition demands that General Musharraf lift the state of emergency, resign as army chief and hold elections by mid-January.

Ms. Bhutto also said she still plans to lead a protest march early next week from Lahore to Islamabad.

In Rawalpindi, police clashed with several hundred protesters who tried to gather for the rally, defying a ban on public demonstrations.(미국의 소리 2007.11.9)
