체니 미국 부통령 바그다드 전격 방문 (Eng)

미국의 딕 체니 부통령은 이라크 지도자들과 폭력사태 종식 노력에 관해 논의하기 위해 예고없이 바그다드를 전격 방문했습니다.

중동 순방에 나선 체니 부통령은 또한 9일 바그다드에서   데이비드 페트라스 이라크 주둔 미군 최고사령관도 만났습니다.

한편, 이라크 북부도시 아르빌에서 트럭 폭탄이 폭발해 적어도 14명이 사망하고 70명 이상 부상했다고, 이라크 당국자들이 밝혔습니다.

바그다드에서 북쪽으로 350킬로미터 떨어진 아르빌은 쿠르드 족 자치지역의 수도로서, 다른 이라크 지방들에 비해 그동안 상대적으로 평화로운 지역이었습니다.

그런가 하면, 이라크 북부도시 키르쿠크 근처에서 무장괴한들이 언론인 4명을 살해했습니다.

국제 언론자유 옹호단체인 국경없는 기자들은 지난 2006년 이후 이라크에서 65명의 언론인과 언론 보조원들이 사망하는 등, 이라크는 세계에서 언론인들에게 가장 위험한 나라라고 지적했습니다.

U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has made an unannounced visit to Baghdad for talks with Iraqi leaders on efforts to end violence in the country.

Cheney met with the commander of U.S. troops in Iraq, General David Petraeus, shortly after arriving in the Iraqi capital today (Wednesday), which marks the start of his tour of the Middle East.

In violence today, Iraqi authorities say at least 19 people were killed and more than 70 wounded in a truck bomb blast in the northern city of Irbil.

Reports from the scene say the blast damaged a security headquarters and the interior ministry of the Kurdish regional government.

Irbil (,about 350-kilometers north of Baghdad,) is the capital of Iraq's Kurdish region and has been relatively peaceful despite the violence in much of the rest of the country.

The U.S. military says one American soldier died and four were wounded by gunfire Tuesday in the restive Diyala province.

A U.S. military spokesman denied today (Wednesday) that U.S helicopter gunships had targeted a school in Diyala Tuesday, but confirmed that two children were killed when they fired at insurgents.
