파키스탄 수도 이슬라마바드의 대법원 주변에서는 수백명의 법조인과 시민운동가들이 대법원장을 지지하는 집회를 개최했습니다. 이 날 대법원에서는 대법원장의 직권 남용에 대한 심리가 시작됐습니다.

집회 참가자들은 모하메드 초드리 대법원장이 도착하자 깃발을 흔들고 반정부 구호를 외쳤습니다.

이 날 대법원 주변에는 경찰과 시위진압부대가 출동했으나 집회 참가자들과의 충돌은 없었습니다.

한편 파키스탄 정부는 12일 이슬라마바드와 라왈핀디, 라호레 등 세 도시에서 200여명의 법조인과 운동가들을 구금했습니다.

페르베즈 무샤라프 파키스탄 대통령은 지난달 초드리 대법원장을 직권 남용 혐의로 직무해제 시켰습니다. 하지만 법조계에서는 이것이 사법권 독립을 침해한 행위라며 강력한 반대 입장을 밝히고 있습니다.

또한 무샤라프 대통령에 반대하는 정치적 움직임도 늘어나고 있습니다.

Hundreds of Pakistani lawyers and activists have rallied in Islamabad to show support for the country's suspended chief justice as he appeared at the Supreme Court for a hearing into allegations he abused his office.

Protesters waved flags and chanted anti-government slogans as Ifitkhar Mohammed Chaudhry arrived at the court for a fourth hearing today (Friday).

Police and paramilitary troops in riot gear guarded the court building, but did not disperse the protesters.

On Thursday, authorities detained more than 200 activists and lawyers in Islamabad, as well as the cities of Rawalpindi and Lahore.

President Pervez Musharraf removed the chief justice of the Supreme Court in March, sparking outrage among the legal community, which views the move as an attack on the independence of the judiciary.

The move also galvanized political opposition to General Musharraf.
