천수이벤 타이완 총통은 중국 본토와의 통일 전담기구인 국가통일위원회를 해체할 계획이라고 밝혔습니다. 중국 지도부는 이같은 움직임에 대해 경고했습니다. 이에 관한 자세한 소식입니다.

최근 며칠동안 중국 당국은 중국 본토와 타이완 통일의 희망을 상징해온 유명무실한 국가통일위원회를 해체하려는 천수이벤 총통에게 경고해 왔습니다. 지난 주, 중국 국무원 타이완판공실의 리 웨이이 대변인은 국가통일위원회의 해체는 타이완해협에서 심각한 위기를 가져올 것이라고 경고했습니다.

중국은 이 지역에서 평화와 안정을 유지하기 위해 최선을 다하겠지만, 동시에 타이완의 어떠한 독립 움직임도 단호히 반대한다고 리 웨이이 대변인은 말했습니다. 중국은 현재 중국의 영토라고 주장하는 타이완을 겨냥해서 수백기의 미사일들을 배치해놓고 있습니다.

그러나 이같은 거듭된 경고에도 불구하고 천수이벤 총통은 27일, 국가안보회의 후 국가통일위원회의 해체 결정을 발표했습니다. 천 총통은 기자들에게 이같은 조치가 중국과의 관계에서 현상을 변경하려는 의도는 아니라고 밝혔습니다.

민주체제를 유지해온 타이완은 국공내전에서 국민당이 공산당에 패해 타이완으로 망명한 1949년부터 자치를 누려왔습니다. 천 총통의 국가통일위원회 해체 결정은 중국이 만약 타이완 정부가 독립 움직임을 보일 경우, 무력을 사용할 수 있다는 내용의 반국가분열법을 통과시킨지 1년만에 나왔습니다.

지난 2004년에 타이완 독립 정강을 내걸고 재선된 천수이벤 타이완 총통은 중국 공산당 지도부가 독립을 더욱 촉진시키려는 것으로 보고 있는 새로운 헌법을 촉구함으로써 중국 정부를 분노케 한 바 있습니다.

미국은 중국의 공격으로부터 타이완을 수호할 것을 다짐하고 있지만, 중국과 충돌하게 되는 것을 원치 않고 있습니다. 미국은 타이완의 독립을 지지하지 않는다고 밝혔습니다.

부쉬 미국 행정부는 중국과 타이완 양측이 현상변화를 회피할 것을 거듭 촉구했습니다.

INTRO: Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian says he is dissolving the part of his government responsible for eventual reunification with mainland China. VOA's Luis Ramirez reports from Beijing, where the Communist leadership has been warning against such a move.

TEXT: For days, Chinese authorities have been warning Chen Shui-bian against getting rid of the long defunct National Unification Council - which to Beijing had symbolized a hope that the mainland and Taiwan would reunite.

Last week, Li Weiyi, spokesman for the mainland's Taiwan Affairs office, warned that getting rid of the council would spark a serious crisis in the Taiwan Strait.

He says Beijing will do its best to maintain peace and stability in the region, but at the same time firmly opposes any Taiwan independence activity.

China has hundreds of missiles pointed at Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of its territory.

But despite the warnings, on Monday Mr. Chen announced his decision to scrap the advisory body after a meeting with his national security team. The Taiwan leader told reporters however the move is not intended to change the status quo in relations with Beijing.

The democratically ruled island has been self-governed since 1949, when Chinese nationalists fled there after their defeat by the Communists in the Chinese civil war.

Mr. Chen's decision to abolish the unification council comes one year after Beijing passed an anti-secession law authorizing the use of force against Taiwan if the island's government moves toward independence.

President Chen, who was reelected in 2004 on a pro-independence platform, has angered Beijing by calling for a new constitution - something the Chinese Communist leadership views as a further push toward independence.

The United States has pledged to help Taiwan defend itself against an attack, but does not want to be drawn into a conflict with China. Washington says it does not support Taiwan independence.

The Bush administration has repeatedly called on both sides to avoid taking any steps to change the status quo. (Signed)
