Two former US presidents, George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, arrived in Thailand's southern resort province of Phuket Saturday morning to inspect areas which were devastated by the Dec. 26 tsunamis and to confer with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, reported the Thai News Agency.

The two former US presidents arrived in Phuket at 11.55 AM via a special flight. They latter traveled by a helicopter to inspect damages at Baan Nam Kem in nearby Phang-nga Province.

Bush and Clinton are scheduled, during their Feb. 19-20 visit, to express their condolences to tsunasmi victims on behalf of the US government and people, and to express their appreciation to the Thai government and people for their assistance rendered to foreign nationals affected by the tsunamis.

They will travel to the Mai Khao Cemetery in the evening to pay respect to those who had perished in the tsunami disaster before meeting with Thaksin to discuss issues of mutual interests.

Following the massive waves attack, US president Bush asked the two former US top leaders to lead efforts to heip raise funds for tsunami relief.

Clinton was also appointed by UN secretary-General Kofi Annan as his special envoy for the tsunami-affected countries.

The two former US presidents will assess damages caused by the disaster and explore opportunities for cooperation with the Thai kingdom in the latter's rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.

The tsunami disaster ravaged Thailand's six sourthern Andaman provinces--Phuket, Phang-nga, Krabi, Trang, Ranong and Satun--and many other countries in Asia and Africa, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Somalia and Madacascar, leaving over 200,000 victims dead, and tens of thousands of others injured or missing

In Thailand alone, the official death toll reached over 5,300 while those who were injured and missing have been recorded at over 8,400 and over 3,000 respective.

Meanwhile, security in Phuket has been tightened for the former US leaders during their stay in the Kingdom.

After Thailand, the two former US top leaders are scheduled to visit Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives for the similar missions. -Xinhua News Agency February 20, 2005-

빌 클린턴 전 미국대통령과 조지 부시 대통령의 아버지인 조지 H.W 부시 전 대통령이 2005년 2월 20일 인도네시아 아체주(州)의 쓰나미(지진해일) 피해 지역을 방문했다
한때 정적이었던 이들 전직 대통령은 이날 직전 방문지인 태국을 출발, 메단에 도착해 수실로 밤방 유도요노 인도네시아 대통령과 만나 아체지역에 대한 구호노력 및 제건 계획등에 대해 환담했다
이분들은 이어 곧바로 헬기를 이용, 반다 아체 지역으로 이동해 수 만명의 이재민이 머물고 있는 난민캠프를 둘러보았다
부시 전대통령은 <우리는 미국민들을 대신헤 피해 지역을 둘러보고 미국의 지원금이 제대로 쓰여지고 있는지를 확인하기 위해 방문했다>고 설명했다
두 미국 전직 대통령은 미국인으로서는 이례적으로 빈다 아체 인근 로크 은가지구에 있는 람푸크 모스크도 방문할 예정이다
한편 이분들은 조지 부시 대통령으로부터 약 30만명의 희생자를 낸 이번 지지해일의 구호기금 모금 책임자로 임명됐으며 앞으로 스리랑카와 몰디브를 방문할 계획이다
