오바마 정전 60주년 연설 "한국전 동맹국의 승리"

워싱턴 한국전 참전 기념공원에서 27일  정전협정 60주년 기념식이 열렸습니다.

이 행사에는 미국에서 바락 오바마 대통령과 척 헤이글 국방장관, 에릭 신세키 보훈장관, 샐리 주얼 내무장관, 제임스 윈펠드 합참 차장 등이 참석했습니다.

한국에서는 새누리당 소속 김정훈 국회 정무위원장을 단장으로 하는 박근혜 대통령 특사단과 안호영 주미 한국대사, 백선엽 대한민국 육군협회장 등이 참석했습니다.

기념식은 한국 전통문화 공연과 미 해병대 군악 연주, 참전용사들에 대한 헌화식, 진혼곡 연주, 미국과 한국 양국 고위 인사들의 축사로 진행됐습니다.

오바마 대통령은 축사에서 6.25전쟁 참전용사들에게 깊은 감사의 뜻을 표했습니다.

수많은 사람들이 자유와 평화 속에 계속 살 수 있었던 건 참전용사들 덕분이라는 겁니다.

오바마 대통령은 6.25전쟁 참전용사들이 다른 참전용사들에 비해 조명을 덜 받은 게 사실이지만 이제 정전협정 60주년을 맞아 이들의 노고와 희생에 최대의 경의를 표하자고 말했습니다.

그러면서 자유는 희생없이 얻을 수 있는 게 아니라며, 3만 6천여 명의 미군이 6.25전쟁에서 전사했고, 아직도 8천명 가까운 참전 미군이 실종 상태에 있다고 말했습니다.

그러나 오바마 대통령은 6.25전쟁이 승자도 패자도 없는 헛된 전쟁은 아니었다고 강조했습니다.

억압과 가난에 빠진 북한과 정반대로 5천만 한국 국민들이 자유와 민주주의를 누리고 세계에서 손꼽히는 역동적인 경제를 이루며 살고 있다는 사실 하나 만으로도 6.25전쟁은 미국과 한국, 유엔군의 승리였고 참전용사들이 남긴 자랑스런 유산이라는 겁니다.

박근혜 한국 대통령의 특사로 참석한 김정훈 의원은 60년전 체결된 정전협정은 단순한 협상의 결과가 아니라 수많은 전투에서 참전용사들이 보여준 희생의 결과라고 강조했습니다.

김정훈 특사는 참전용사들과 그 가족들이 아무런 조건없이 한국을 지켜주기 위해 피와 땀을 흘려줬다며, 한국 정부와 한국 국민들을 대신해 깊은 감사의 뜻을 전했습니다.

김 특사는 한국 정부가 정전협정 체결일인7월27일을 ‘유엔군 참전의 날’로 다시 제정해 기념하고 있다며, 한국 국민들이 참전용사들의 희생을 결코 잊지 않고 있다고 말했습니다.

올해 86살의 6.25전쟁 참전용사 존 콜씨는60년 전 한국 땅에서 동료들이 흘린 피가 헛되지 않았다며 감격해 했습니다.

한국이 전쟁의 참화에서 벗어나 번영의 길을 걷고 있는 데 대해 매우 자랑스럽게 생각한다는 겁니다.

한편 한국 특사단의 일원으로 참석한 6.25전쟁의 영웅 백선엽 장군은 한국 국방부를 대신해 미국 국방부에 감사패를 전달했습니다. 감사패는 미 국방부 청사의 한국전쟁 기념 전시관에 소장돼 일반에 공개될 예정입니다.

President Obama today paid tribute to the veterans of the Korean War, marking the 60th anniversary of the war’s end. "Perhaps the highest tribute we can offer our veterans of Korea is to do what should have been done the day you came home,” the President said during remarks at the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall. “In our hurried lives, let us pause. Let us listen. Let these veterans carry us back to the days of their youth, and let us be awed by their shining deeds."

 

"You, our veterans of Korea, deserved better. And down the decades, our nation has worked to right that wrong, including here, with this eternal memorial, where the measure of your sacrifice is enshrined for all time.  Because here in America, no war should ever be forgotten, and no veteran should ever be overlooked.  And after the armistice, a reporter wrote, “When men talk in some distant time with faint remembrance of the Korean War, the shining deeds will live."  The shining deeds will live. "

 

The President asked that we not just to listen to the stories of these veterans, but learn from them:

 

"Korea reminds us that when we send our troops into battle, they deserve the support and gratitude of the American people -- especially when they come home. Today, let us remember that -- right now -- our sons and daughters continue to risk their lives, give their lives, in Afghanistan.  And as this war ends and we welcome them home, we will make it our mission to give them the respect and the care and the opportunities that they have earned."

 

President Obama closed by offering these heroes the thanks of a grateful nation:

 

"Veterans of the Korean War -- in the spring of your youth you learned how short and precious life can be.  And because of you, millions of people can keep on living it, in freedom and in peace.  Your lives are an inspiration.  Your service will never be forgotten. You have the thanks of a grateful nation.  And your shining deeds will live -- now and forever. "
