백악관에는 모두 130개 이상의 방들이 있다. 중심 건물에는 대통령 가족의 숙소와 18~19세기 양식으로 장식된 여러 접대실들이 있는데, 중심 건물의 일부는 여행객들에게도 개방되어 있다. 북쪽 포티코는 중심 건물로 향하는 공식적인 입구이고 남쪽 포티코는 대통령의 가족들만이 사용하는 입구이다. 서쪽 테라스에는 수영장과 체육관이 있으며, 동쪽 테라스에는 극장이 들어서 있다. 서측 건물에는 대통령 집무실과 각료실, 그리고 기자실이 있으며 동측 건물에는 그외의 여러 사무실들이 있다.

오랫동안 백악관은 미국의 주요한 명승지가 되어왔으며, 대중에게 공개된 지역에는 매년 150만 명의 관광객이 다녀간다. 백악관 건물은 내셔널 캐피털 공원의 일부이며 1988년 박물관으로 승인되었다.
