로마가톨릭 교황 베네딕토 16세, 앙골라서 대형미사 집전

 로마가톨릭 교황 베네딕토 16세가 22일 두 번째 아프리카 순방지인 앙골라에서 수십만 명이 참가하는 대형 미사를 집전했다.

   베네딕토 16세는 남아프리카 지역 주교들이 참석한 가운데 앙골라 수도 루안다 외곽에서 열린 미사에서 먼저 전날 축구경기장에서 사람들이 몰리면서 여성 2명이 압사한데 대해 "깊은 슬픔"을 표했다.

   교황은 "예수 그리스도에게 그들을 맡긴다"며 "그들의 가족과 친구들에게 나의 연민과 함께 깊은 슬픔을 전하고 싶다"고 말한 뒤 "다친 사람들을 위해서도 기도하겠다"고 덧붙였다.

   이어 교황은 아프리카 지역에서 "사악한 기류"가 전쟁과 함께 인종 및 부족간 대립을 일으키고 있다며 영적 각성을 촉구했다.

   "가난이 가난한 이들을 노예로 만들고 다음 세대로부터 더 굳건하고 정의로운 사회를 만들기 위한 자산을 빼앗고 있다"고 성토한 교황은 부패 상황에 대해서도 언급했다.

   포르투갈 식민지 시절 가톨릭이 전래된 앙골라는 사하라사막 남쪽 지역에서 가톨릭의 중심지 중 한 곳이며, 국민 가운데 가톨릭 신자 비율은 55% 정도다.

Pope Benedict, travelling in the customary "popemobile", received a rapturous welcome from devotees before Mass on the outskirts of Angola's capital, Luanda.

 

 

          The day began early for many Angolans, with a long trek from central Luanda to the field where the Mass was celebrated.

 

 

           Hundreds of thousands of people turned out to see the pontiff - taking all kinds of measures to ensure they caught a glimpse.

 

 

              During the Mass, the Pope spoke of his sorrow at the deaths of two women at a youth event he was speaking at on Saturday.

 

 

People in the crowd found many ways of displaying their devotion - with the Pope's face emblazoned on T-shirts, sarongs and even on small details, such as earrings.

 

 

  There were reports of several people suffering from heatstroke during the Mass, and the crowds relied on water-trucks to stave off the heat.
