Architect of the ‘Asian highway’ concept 아시아고속도로의 창안자는 파키스탄인 Dear Sir, 치트랄 뉴스 담당자님께, With reference to a recent news item carried by your paper concerning ‘Asian Highway’, I would just like to mention that the 'Asian Highway' concept was actually developed by my Father Mr Mohd Sallahuddin Ahmad whilst he was working for the United Nations. He was Based in Bangkok, Thailand in ECAFE( Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East).When he joined the Transport section there it had in total 3 or 4 staff but he developed this idea that a Road network linking all of Asia from Japan to Turkey would not only enhance trade but make peoples of all countries so interdependent economically that possibilities of wars between neighbours and in the region would be avoided. '아시아고속도로'에 관하여 귀(貴)신문사가 보도한 최근의 한 기사에 관련하여, 저는 '아시아고속도로'라는 개념은 저의 아버지인 모흐드 살라후딘 아흐마드께서 유엔에 근무하던 동안에 실제로 개발했다는 사실을 말씀드리고 싶습니다. 아버지께서는 태국의 방콕에 있던 ECAFE(아시아 및 극동 지역 경제 위원회: 유엔에스캅의 前身)에서 일했습니다. 선친이 그곳 교통과에 들어갈 당시 직원은 총 3~4명에 불과했지만, 선친은 일본에서 터키에 이르는 모든 아시아 국가들을 연결하는 도로망이 생긴다면 무역을 증진할 뿐만 아니라 모든 나라의 주민들을 경제적으로 상호의존하게 만들어 인접국가 사이와 지역내에서의 전쟁의 가능성들을 피할 수 있을 것이라는 이 아이디어를 개발해냈습니다. By the time my Father had planned, developed and convinced various countries in the region to come on board there were 200 staff working for the Transport department.His plan was simple but brilliant,he asked each country to contribute towards making their part of the highway in their own country but to a pre-planned route. This way the Road linked various countries while forming the overall Asian Highway. 선친께서 계획하고 발전시키고 설득하여 아시아 지역내 여러 국가들을 회의장으로 불러들였을 무렵에 교통국에서 근무하는 직원은 200명으로 불어났습니다. 선친의 계획은 단순하지만 멋진 것이었습니다. 선친은 각각의 나라들이 미리 계획된 노선에 따라서 자국내의 해당 고속도로 부분을 만드는데 이바지하도록 요청했습니다. 이런 식으로 그 도로는 여러 나라들을 연결하여 마침내 전체로서 아시아고속도로를 형성하게 된 것입니다. To Finally prove its worth he implemented it by organising two rallies,which were not races for the fastest , but a test of good driving skills i.e each driver leaving the start point at a designated time and if he followed the speed limits and allowing for stop over time, was supposed to arrive at the finish on a particular date and on a particular time. 종국적으로 그 아이디어의 가치를 증명하기 위하여 선친은 두 번의 자동차 경주대회를 조직하였는데, 그것들은 빨리 달리기 경주가 아니라 운전기술의 우수성을 시험하는 것이었습니다. 즉, 지정된 시각에 출발점을 떠난 각각의 운전자가 속도 제한들을 준수하고 운전 기간 중의 정차를 허용할 경우에 특정일의 특정시각에 결승선에 도착하게 되는 경주였습니다. The first Rally was held from Bangkok to Singapore in the early sixties. It had to stop in Singapore because of the war in vietnam.The second rally was from Turkey to East Pakistan held in early seventies.This rally also crossed west pakistan into India and then on to East pakistan.Burma did not give permission to connect further on to Bangkok. 첫 경주는 60년대초 방콕에서 싱가포르까지 개최되었습니다. 베트남에서의 전쟁 때문에 싱가포르에서 중단해야 했습니다. 두번째 경주는 70년대초에 터키에서 동파키스탄(오늘날의 방글라데시)까지 개최되었습니다. 후자는 서파키스탄(오늘날의 파키스탄)에서 인도를 거쳐 동파키스탄까지 달렸습니다. 태국 방콕까지 더 연결하는 것을 버마(오늘날의 미얀마) 정부가 허가하지 않았습니다. Mr M.S.Ahmad's contribution for Pakistan and to Asia as a whole, is invaluable and the proudest part of all is that he was a Pakistani who achieved an International project whose benefits are now being reaped. 파키스탄과 아시아 전체에 대한 모흐드 살라후딘 아흐마드의 기여는 매우 가치 있는 것이며 그 중에서도 가장 자랑스런 것은 그 분이 그 열매를 지금 거두고 있는 국제적인 프로젝트를 성취한 파키스탄인이었다는 사실입니다. My Father retired in 1972 and was recommended for a national award' Tamgha' and two weeks before he flew to meet the president, he passed away. 아버지는 1972년에 퇴직하셨고 국가가 수여하는 '탐가' 상 수상자로 추천되었으나 시상식장에서 대통령을 만나기 2주전에 별세하셨습니다. So when Pakistani's hear or see 'Asian Highway' they should know that it was one of their own who made it happen. 그러므로 파키스탄인들이 '아시아고속도로'에 관한 소식을 듣거나 볼 때에는 그 사업을 창안한 사람이 바로 파키스탄인이었다는 사실을 알아야만 합니다.
