한국, 외국인 지문등록 의무화 추진 (E)

한국 법무부는 오는 2010년부터 한국을 방문하는 외국인 관광객들의 지문과 사진 등록을 의무화하는 방안을 추진 중이라고 밝혔습니다. 한국 정부는 이 같은 내용의 출입국관리법 개정안을 내년에 국회에 제출할 예정입니다. 법무부 대변인은 지문과 사진 정보는 테러와의 싸움과 외국인 범죄 예방에 필수적이라고 말했습니다. 한국은 1년 이상 체류를 원하는 외국인들의 지문 등록 제도를 시행해오다 지난 2003년에 이를 폐지한 바 있습니다. 미국과 일본도 외국인에 대한 지문 등록을 의무화하고 있습니다.

South Korea's justice ministry has announced plans to start fingerprinting and photographing foreign tourists by 2010.

The measures are part of a revised immigration bill that will be submitted to parliament next year.

A justice ministry spokesman says the information is necessary to fight terrorism and prevent crimes by foreigners.

Seoul is trying to boost the country's image as a tourism destination. But critics say the system could become a deterrent to potential visitors.

South Korea had previously fingerprinted foreign residents who intended to stay more than a year, but scrapped the requirement in 2003.

The United States and Japan also have a similar systems in place.
