Tens of thousands of people have massed in the German city of Rostock to protest ahead of the G8 summit being held nearby next week.       The large crowd included many from anti-capitalist and anti-globalisation groups.

The streets of Rostock were transformed for the march, thought to be the largest gathering in the city's history

But not all the protesters were quite so colourful. Many wore an all-black uniform to avoid easy identification by police in case trouble flared.     Some 13,000 police were out on the streets to oversee the proceedings.     Though most protesters moved peacefully through the city, by mid-afternoon violence had flared on the march's fringes.       Police said they came under "massive assault" by a small group of protesters. The authorities had warned of attacks by radical left-wing groups.   Violent protesters broke up paving stones and dug up cobble stones to use as missiles.

Vehicles were overturned and torched, sending a black pall of smoke over the area.

Police used chemical sprays to try to disperse the crowd. Later tear gas and water cannon were used to drive the trouble-makers back.

시위대는 2일 로스톡 중심가를 행진하는 가운데 풍선과 깃발을 흔들며 평화와 반상업주의 구호를 외쳤습니다.  수 천명의 시위자들이 추가로 버스와 기차를 타고 도시로 속속 모여들고 있어서 이번 시위는 G8 정상회의를 반대하는 역대 최대 규모가 될 것으로 추산되고 있습니다.

시위 주최측은 참가자들을 10만명으로 예상하고 있다고 말했습니다.

독일당국이 폭력 시위에 대비해 수 천명의 경찰과 전경을 로스톡시 주변에 배치한 가운데 이날 일부 시위대가 돌을 던지며 폭력시위를 벌여 경찰과 충돌하기도 했습니다. 독일 경찰은 폭력시위를 벌인 일부 시위자들을 체포했습니다
