모스크바를 방문중인 로버트 게이츠 미 국방장관도 "유족과 러시아 국민에 깊은 애도를 표한다"면서 "그는 러시아 민주화의 중요한 인물이었으며 미국인들은 탱크위에 올라 쿠데타를 저지하던 그의 모습을 잊지못할 것"이라고 말했다.

MOSCOW. A meeting was held at noon on 22 August 1991 near the RSFSR House of the Soviets in honour of the victory of Russian democracy over the reaction and was attended by many thousands of people. The tricolour Russian flag flew on the podium and it was on that very day that it acquired the status of a Russian state symbol. Russian President Boris Yeltsin congratulated the crowd on their victory and expressed his most profound thanks to those who had gathered during the preceding days and nights to defend democracy
