A French judge has ordered 42 people, including the son of a former French president, to stand trial for their alleged role in illegal arms sales to Angola during that country's civil war.

Judicial officials today (Friday) announced the indictment of the group in connection with the sale of 790 million dollars worth of weapons to Angola between 1993 and 2000.

Prosecutors say the two primary suspects are French businessman Pierre Falcone and his associate Arcady Gaydamak. They are accused of orchestrating the sale of heavy weaponry to the government of Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.

The son of late French President Francois Mitterrand - Jean-Christophe Mitterand - faces charges of complicity in illegal arms trafficking. The younger Mitterand was a presidential adviser on African affairs during his father's time in office.<미국의 소리 2007.4.9>
