Israeli infantry - backed by tanks - are battling Hamas fighters in the Gaza Strip, after launching a ground offensive in the Palestinian territory late on Saturday.

 

Clashes are reportedly taking place in the northern Gaza - in Gaza City itself, Beit Lahiya and the Jabaliya refugee camp.

 

The Israeli operation - aimed at stopping rocket attacks by Hamas - is being supported by intensive air bombardment of Gaza.

 

Artillery is also shelling what Israel says are suspected Hamas targets across Gaza.

 

Both sides reported casualties, with Israel saying 30 of its soldiers were wounded in the ground operation
