이스라엘 부총리 ‘이란 핵개발 계속하면 침공할 것’ (E)

샤울 모파즈 이스라엘 부총리는 6일 이란 정부가 핵 무기 프로그램을 중단하지 않는다면 이스라엘은 이란을 침공할 수밖에 없을 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

모파즈 부총리는 교통부 장관이면서 세 명의 부총리 가운데 한 명이며, 이스라엘 안보 내각의 전직 구성원입니다. 모파즈 부총리는 현재 에후드 올메르트 총리가 이끄는 집권여당 카디마 정당의 대표 직책을 노리고 있습니다. 올메르트 총리는 부패 관련 스캔들로 정치적 미래가 불투명해진 상황입니다.

테헤란 태생인 모파즈 총리는 국제사회의 제재는 이란의 핵 프로그램 개발을 저지시키는 데 있어 비효과적이었다며 현재 상황은 결국 이스라엘이 이란을 공격하는 결과를 가져올 것이라고 내다봤습니다.

An Israeli Cabinet minister, Shaul Mofaz, is quoted today (Friday) as saying that Israel will have no alternative but to attack Iran if the Tehran government does not halt what he calls its nuclear-weapons program.

Mofaz, the transportation minister, is one of three deputy prime ministers and a former member of Israel's "security Cabinet." He is challenging Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for leadership of the ruling Kadima Party, following a corruption scandal that has clouded Mr. Olmert's political future.

Mofaz, who was born in Tehran, says international sanctions have been ineffective in stopping Iran's controversial nuclear program, and he predicted that situation will eventually result in an Israeli attack on Iran. His comments came in a newspaper interview in Israel (with the mass-circulation daily "Yediot Ahronot"). Excerpts of the interview were released Friday, but publication of the full text is not expected before Sunday.
