카터 전 대통령, 시리아에서 하마스 지도자 만나기로

논란 속에 중동을 방문중인 미국의 지미 카터 전 대통령이 18일 팔레스타인  무장세력 하마스의 지도자 칼레드 메샬과 시리아에서 만납니다.

노벨 평화상 수상자인 카터 전 대통령은 메샬과 만나 하마스의 정적인 팔레스타인 파타 세력과,  이스라엘에 대해 하마스가 가지고 있는 입장차이를 평화적으로 해결할 것을 설득하겠다고 말했습니다.

이스라엘과 미국은 카터 전 대통령이 양국으로부터 테러단체로 지목된 하마스와 만나기로 한 것에 대해 비판적인 입장을 밝히고 있습니다.*

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter is expected to meet with the exiled leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Syria, the latest stop on his regional tour.

Mr. Carter arrived in Damascus today (Friday) for talks with Khaled Meshaal and Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The Nobel Prize winner says he intends to try to get Meshaal to agree to a peaceful resolution of differences with Israel and the Palestinian faction Fatah, a rival of Hamas.

Israel and the United States have criticized Mr. Carter for agreeing to meet with Hamas, which both countries consider a terrorist group.

But Mr. Carter says peace in Israel is impossible without engaging Hamas, which won parliamentary elections in 2006.

In a separate development, an Israeli Cabinet minister (Eli Yishai) has told Mr. Carter he wants to meet with Hamas to facilitate a prisoner exchange.
