부시 대통령, 푸틴 대통령과 회담 위해 러시아 방문

조지 부시 미국 대통령은 블라드미르 푸틴 대통령과의 회담을 위해 5일 러시아 흑해의 소치 휴양소에 도착했습니다. 두 정상은 각각 임기를 마무리함에 따라 양국간 향후 관계에 대해 논의할 계획입니다.  

양국 정상은 이 날 부시 대통령이 소치 휴양소에 도착한 뒤 짧게 첫날 회동을 가졌습니다.

부시 대통령을 수행한 백악관 당국자들은 앞서 이번 회담에서 미국이 중앙 유럽에 미사일 방어 체계을 구축하려는 계획에의 합의가 도출되는 것은 기대하지 않는다고 밝혔습니다.

다나 페리노 백악관 대변인은 그와 관련한 논의는 잘 진행되고 있으나 이번 회담 이후 추가적인 노력이 필요하다고 밝혔습니다.

러시아는 미국의 미사일 방어 체계 구축 계획은 자국 안보에 대한 위협이라며 강하게 반대하고 있습니다. 그러나 미국은 미사일 방어 체계는 중동의 공격으로부터 유럽을 방어하기 위한 것이라고 밝히고 있습니다.

부시 대통령은 이번주 루마니아 부카레스트에서 열린 북대서양조약기구, NATO 정상회담 참석차 크로아티아에 들른 뒤 소치로 향했습니다. (끝)  

U.S. President George W. Bush is in Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi for talks with President Vladimir Putin on future relations between their two countries as both men conclude their terms of office.

The two leaders opened their first round of talks shortly after Mr. Bush arrived at the Russian president's vacation residence.

Earlier, White House officials accompanying Mr. Bush said they did not expect the talks to produce an agreement on U.S. plans to deploy an anti-missile defense system in central Europe.

A spokeswoman (Dana Perino) said discussions on the issue are on the right track, but more work will be needed after Sochi.

Russia strongly opposes the U.S. missile defense plans, describing them as a threat to its security. But the United States says the planned system is aimed at protecting Europe from an attack from the Middle East.
