President Bush Pardons "May and Flower" in National Thanksgiving Turkey Ceremony

President George W. Bush offers an official pardon to May, the 2007 Thanksgiving Turkey, during festivities Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, in the Rose Garden of the White House. In pardoning May, and the alternate, Flower, the President said, "May they live the rest of their lives in blissful gobbling. And may all Americans enjoy a holiday full of love and peace. White House photo by Chris Greenberg   *추수 감사절(미국 국경일) 한 해의 수확과 신의 은총을 감사하며 기념하는 미국의 국경일. 1621년 가을 플리머스의 총독 윌리엄 브래드퍼드가 수확의 풍요함을 감사하며, 그동안의 노고를 위로하는 축제를 3일 동안 열고 근처에 사는 인디언들을 초대하여 초기의 개척민들과 어울릴 수 있는 자리를 마련한 데서 그 유래를 찾을 수 있다. 19세기 말엽까지 추수감사절은 뉴잉글랜드 전역에서 하나의 관례적인 축제가 되었고, 1863년 에이브러햄 링컨 대통령이 공식적으로 국경일로 선포했다. 칠면조 고기와 호박 파이의 축제라고도 하는 이 행사는 미국의 고유한 풍습으로 정착되었으며, 1941년 법령이 바뀌어 11월의 4번째 목요일로 정해지기 전까지는 11월의 마지막 목요일을 추수감사절로 기념했다. 캐나다는 1879년 11월에 추수감사절을 국경일로 선포하고 지금은 매년 10월의 2번째 월요일에 축제를 열고 있다.   http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/11/images/20071120-3_p112007db-0055-515h.html
