이스라엘 대통령 선출…시몬 페레스 전 부총리 (E)

원로 정치인인 시몬 페레스 이스라엘 부총리가 13일 제 9대 대통령에 당선됐습니다.

올해 83세의 노벨 평화상 수상자인 페레스 부총리는 이날 의회의 2차 투표에서 단독후보로 나서 120명의 재적의원 가운데 86명의 지지를 얻어 새로운 대통령에 선출됐습니다.

이에 앞서 그의 경쟁자인 리쿠드당 소속 루벤 리블린과 노동당 소속인 콜레트 아비탈 후보는  2차 투표 참가를 포기했습니다.

페레스 씨는  대통령직은 어떤 한 개인보다 더 크다며, 자신은 자신을 대통령으로 뽑아준 이번 투표가 우정을 만들어낼 것으로 믿는다고 말했습니다.

카차브 현 대통령은 임기 만료를 앞두고 여직원을 성폭행한 혐의가 드러나 직무가 정지된 상태입니다.

Veteran statesman Shimon Peres has been elected as the ninth president of Israel.

The 83-year-old Nobel laureate received the support of 86 out of 120 lawmakers in the second round of parliamentary voting in which he was the sole candidate.

His two rivals (Reuven Rivlin and Colette Avital) withdrew from the race earlier today (Wednesday) after the first-round vote.

Mr. Peres says the office of the presidency is larger than any one man, and that he believes the vote to elect him president was one made out of friendship.

Mr. Peres has held virtually all of Israel's top civilian jobs, without ever having won a national election in his six-decade political career.

He will be sworn in as president on July 15th. (미국의 소리 2007.6.13)
