CANNES, France, May 16 (Xinhua) -- The 60th Cannes Film Festival opened Wednesday with top Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai premiering his latest movie.

The screen's well-known faces -- Luc Besson, Juliette Binoche, David Lynch and Andie MacDowell -- stepped up the red carpet to attend the opening ceremony. Other stars at the party included China's Gong Li and India's Aishwarya Rai.

Stars slated for appearances include George Clooney, Sharon Stone, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Pacino and Angelina Jolie.

Germany's Diane Kruger, of Hollywood blockbuster "Troy," presided over the opening ceremony.

Actress Shu Qi from China's Taiwan and 98-year-old Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira declared the May 16-27 festival open.

"My Blueberry Nights," a film by Wong Kar-Wai set in the United States -- his first in English, was screened at the opening ceremony as the first of the 22 films in competition for the prestigious Palme d'Or.

Cannes Film Festival was founded in 1939 but almost as soon as it opened, the festival was canceled because World War II broke out. The festival is held annually, with a few exceptions.
