이탈리아, 아프간에 추가병력 파견 (E)

이탈리아는 아프가니스탄에 헬리콥터 5대, 장갑차18대와 145명의 병력을 추가 파견하기로 결정했습니다.

이탈리아의 안사통신은 의회에서 이같은 증강이 아프가니스탄에서 이탈리아의 역할 변동을 의미하는 것은 아니라고 한 아르투르 파리시 국방장관의 말을 인용, 보도했습니다.

파리시 장관은 이같은 병력 증강과 장비 보강이 현지 이탈리아군의 기동성을 높여줌으로써 2천명의 이탈리아군을 보호해 줄 것이라고 말했습니다.

이같은 병력 증강은 올해에 로마노 프로디 이탈리아 총리에게 민감한 문제가 돼 왔습니다.

한편 아프가니스탄 국방부는 15일 남부 칸다하르에서 야간 공습으로 적어도 11명의 탈레반 무장세력들이 살해됐다고 발표했습니다.

Italy is increasing its military presence in Afghanistan with five helicopters, 18 armored vehicles and an additional 145 soldiers.

The Italian news agency, ANSA, reports Defense Minister Arturo Parisi told parliament the increase does not mean a change in Italy's role in Afghanistan. He says the reinforcements and equipment will protect the two thousand Italian troops already there, allowing them greater and faster mobility.

Italy's commitment to the NATO mission in Afghanistan has been a delicate issue for Prime Minister Romano Prodi this year.

Left-wing groups stepped up pressure on his government earlier this year as attacks in Afghanistan increased. But by the end of March, the Italian government had renewed its military commitment to NATO's Afghanistan mission.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan's defense ministry says at least 11 Taleban fighters were killed in overnight air strikes in southern Afghanistan.(미국의 소리 2007.5.15)
