좌우 진영의 남녀 후보 대결로 비상한 관심을 모으고 있는 프랑스의 대선 결선투표가 6일 본토 투표에 앞서 5일 일부 해외 영토에서 시작됐습니다.

투표는 제일 먼저 캐나다의 대서양 연안에 있는 프랑스 영토 생 피에르와 미클롱 섬에서 시작됐습니다. 이어서 카리브해의 마르티니크와 과들루프 그리고 남 태평양의 프랑스령 폴리네시아에서도 5일 투표가 시작됩니다.

오늘 투표는 프랑스 본토와의 시차를 고려해 100만여 명의 해외 영토 프랑스인들에게 먼저 실시되는 것입니다.

최근 여론 조사에서는 우파 니콜라 사르코지 후보가 좌파 세골렌 루아얄 후보를 적어도 9퍼센트 포인트 앞서고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다.

French citizens in the country's overseas territories have begun casting ballots in a presidential runoff election to determine who will succeed President Jacques Chirac.

Today's (Saturday's) early voting comes a day before voters in mainland France cast their ballots for either conservative Nicolas Sarkozy or Socialist Segolene Royal.

Early voting opens in the tiny island territories of St. Pierre and Miquelon off Canada's east coast. Voting also will take place (today / Saturday) on the Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe, and in French Polynesia in the southern Pacific Ocean.

Voting starts a day early in French overseas territories, where there are about one million voters, to compensate for the time difference with mainland France.

The latest public opinion polls indicate Sarkozy leads Royal by at least nine percentage points.(미국의 소리 2007.5.5)
