보리스 옐친 전 러시아 대통령이 향년 76세로 사망했습니다.  크레믈린 궁 대변인은 옐친 대통령의 사망소식을 확인했지만 구체적인 사인에 대해서는 언급하지 않았습니다.

옐친 전 대통령은 1991년 러시아 최초로 국민투표에 의해 대통령으로 선출됐습니다. 옐친 대통령은 같은 해 8월 미하일 고르바초프 소련 대통령에 반대하는 강경 공산주의 노선의 구데타 시도를 저지한 후, 궁극적으로 소련연방의 붕괴를 가져온 정책을 추구했습니다.

옐친 대통령은 1996년 대통령으로 재선출됐지만 심장질환을 앓아 여러 번 심상수술을 시술받았습니다. 옐친 대통령의 건강은 점차 악화돼 1999년 12월 31일 대통령 직에서 사임했습니다.

Former Russian President Boris Yeltsin has died at the age of 76.

Kremlin officials have confirmed the death, but gave no details.

Mr. Yeltsin was first president of Russia elected by popular vote, winning the post in 1991. He defied a hard-line communist coup attempt against Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in August that year, then pursued policies that led to the dissolution of the Soviet Uion

He won re-election in 1996, but suffered major heart problems and underwent multiple bypass surgery. His health gradually declined and he resigned on December 31, 1999. He turned power over to current President Vladimir Putin.(미국의 소리 2007.4.24)
