아프가니스탄에서 군대와 경찰의 합동작전으로 탈레반 무장세력 69명을 사살했다고, 아프가니스탄 당국이 밝혔습니다. 이번 작전은 남부 헬만드 지방에서 실시됐습니다.

Afghan officials say at least 69 Taleban militants were killed in a joint operation by military and police forces in southern Helmand province Thursday.

A defense ministry spokesman, Zahir Azimi, said today (Friday) that seven police officers also were killed in the fighting. Earlier reports said NATO forces were involved in the operation, but Azimi said they were not.

He said troops are assessing the damage and looking for weapons.

Helmand province has seen heavy fighting between NATO and Taleban forces. The region is Afghanistan's top opium producer and has been plagued by attacks from Taleban and foreign militants.

Last month in Helmand, NATO launched Operation Achilles with 45-hundred NATO troops and one thousand Afghan soldiers to preempt an anticipated offensive by Taleban fighters.(미국의 소리 3007.3.23)
