미러 정상회담, 새로운 핵군축조약 체결 방침 확인

 

 오바마 미국대통령과 러시아의 메드베데프 대통령은 23일, 뉴욕에서 회담을 갖고, 새로운 핵군축조약을 연말까지 체결하기로 방침을 확인했습니다.

회담에서 메드베데프 대통령은 오바마 대통령이 지난 주, 러시아가 강력히 반대해 온 대 유럽 미사일 방위계획의 발본적인 재검토를 발표한데 대해 높이 평가하고, 오는 12월에 효력을 상실하는 제1차전략무기감축조약을 대신하는 새로운 핵군축조약을 목표대로 연말까지 체결하기로 방침을 확인했습니다.

한편, 미러 양국이 대립해 온 이란의 핵개발문제와 관련해 오바마 대통령이, 이란이 성실히 교섭에 응하지 않고 핵개발을 중지하지 않는다면, 추가적인 제재를 가하지 않을 수 없다는 점을 확인했다고 말하자, 메드베데프 대통령도, 제재를 가하는 것이 때로는 불가결할 때도 있다고 말했습니다.

Following his meeting with Barack Obama, Mr Medvedev said, in particular, that the United States and Russia intend to conclude a new treaty to replace START by the previously agreed date.

Speaking about possible sanctions against Iran, Dmitry Medvedev stressed that Russia's position on this matter is clear: sanctions rarely have a productive outcome, but in some cases their use is inevitable. In any case, Mr Medvedev noted, Russia is ready to continue cooperating with the U.S. on the topic of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Russian and American presidents discussed issues related to missile defence in some detail. Dmitry Medvedev pointed out that he considers the U.S. administration's decision concerning antimissile shield to be very reasonable, as it reflects both the views of the United States and Russia concerning the best way to ensure antimissile defence in Europe and throughout the world.

Earlier on, the U.S. President announced that elements of a antimissile defence system will not be deployed in Poland and the Czech Republic.
